Daily Devotional “What Impresses God”
Be different!
November 01, 2022
His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse,
nor his delight in the legs of the warrior;
the Lord delights in those who fear him,
who put their hope in his unfailing love.
Have you ever thought about what impresses God? He is the awesome Creator of our vast, unimaginably wondrous universe, and he has named billions of stars in our galaxy, as though he were naming puppies or kittens.
That’s just our galaxy. Is not God impressed with these accomplishments?
In a sense, he is; it says in Genesis that after he created the sun, moon and stars, he paused and said that it was good.
Yet the celestial bodies are not what strike God. What about other aspects of his creation? Do lions or tigers make a big impression?
The grace and power of a horse? How about human beings, the epitome of all his creative works?
After all, he put a lot of thought into developing bones and muscles, the mind and our nervous systems. But not even these things truly impress God.
So what strikes him? Psalm 147 tells us. It’s not kittens, puppies, horses, or even people; rather, the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who place their hope in his unfailing love.
He is moved when he sees us stand back in awesome respect and worship him. This is what touches his heart.
One of my favorite theologians, Dr. John Piper, says that the good news for those who enjoy God simply being God, is that he enjoys them. He delights in those who depend on his power, and he loves to be the God on the side of the needy.
Today, you can do something and be someone who gives God pleasure. (Isn’t that amazing?
We can actually give Almighty God pleasure!) You don’t have to search the universe for a way to move the Almighty…just place your hope in him.
Purify my heart, Lord God. Refine my motives, sanctify my intentions, and stir within me a deep desire to worship you with a happy heart.
