When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables…”

Mark 4:10-11

Today’s Scripture speaks of a time when a large crowd gathered around the Lord, listening to him speak about the parable of the sower.

After Jesus was done, you can imagine most people went home perplexed. Yes, he had told a fascinating story but—what did it really mean? But verse 10, says “When Jesus was alone, the twelve disciples and the others asked him about the parable.

And he told them, ‘The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you….’” And there, away from the clamor of the crowd, he revealed profound truths to them.

Some had just walked away unsatisfied. But others drew near determined to understand in a deeper way.

My friend, don’t be the one who is quick to leave the Lord’s presence. When you don’t understand something, hang around after everyone else has gone. Crowd in close to Jesus. Let him teach you the secrets of the kingdom.

Lord, I don’t want to miss anything you have for me. Don’t let me lose interest or drift away before you have finished speaking to me.

Don’t let me become impatient or discouraged as I wait on you for perspective and deeper Understanding. When you are revealing secrets to others, Lord, tell me too!

Here is a trustworthy saying:

If we died with him,
we will also live with him;
if we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we disown him,
he will also disown us;
if we are faithless,
he remains faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.

2 Timothy 2:11-13

What a great verse as we near the end of the year. For here is a trustworthy saying: It really is all about Jesus.

We’ve covered so many promises of God in the last 364 days, and every one of them—every single verse—points in some way to Jesus. He is the Word of Life (1 John 1:1).

Revelation 22:13 frames Jesus with these timeless words, for the Savior himself proclaims, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”

What more can we say? Who else would we turn to? There is no one like Jesus. And I think I can hear you say “Amen!” to that.

Second Corinthians 1:20 (KJV) says, “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.” Amen signifies “so be it!”

Every promise of God which has blessed you this year ultimately finds its conclusion in Christ.

Every insight and bit of wisdom you’ve garnered, every obedience you’ve learned, every step higher into a more prayerful life, all of it finds its center—it’s beginning and end—in Jesus Christ.

You are about to turn the corner into a brand-new year. It is my prayer that the plans, decisions and choices you make, the way you will spend your time, the thoughts you entertain and the company you keep, the manner in which you live before others, all of it will point to Jesus. May his glory go before you in the New Year, friend!

Jesus Christ… Son of God… Lord of heaven and earth…in the year to come, help me to showcase your glory and greatness in fresh new ways. And to this, I say, Amen! So be it!

“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me.

Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.”

Philippians 1:21-24

My grandmother lived to be a ripe old age—so old, in fact, that as a teenager I wondered why God allowed her to linger in so much suffering.

Grandmother Landwehr had to leave her cherished home to come live with us. My sister, Jay, moved out of her bedroom and in with Kathy.

My siblings and I ran errands, read to her, and took on extra chores so that my mother would be free to tend to all the extra needs.

Grandmother Landwehr changed our family dynamics; my sisters and I became a lot less self-focused.

As my Lutheran grandmother lay in bed, she probably prayed, “I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far.” But it was more necessary for us—my sisters and I—that she remain. Sometimes our suffering is mostly for the benefit of others. God did not “take my grandmother home” before he had taught us how to serve selflessly.

Was God only “using” my grandmother’s hardship for our benefit? Hardly!

Paul explains later in verses 25 and 26, “Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.”

God accomplished much in my life through Grandmom…and it’s all to her account.

Lord, help me to understand that my suffering can—and does—benefit others. Help me to see that’s the more necessary thing.

“And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.

And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.

And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.”

Genesis 28:10-12 (KJV)

When I was a Child in Sunday school, we used to sing a popular chorus, “We are climbing Jacob’s ladder… soldiers of the cross.”

The song harkened to a story in the Bible about Jacob. He fell asleep and had a wonderfully mysterious dream: Jacob saw a ladder stretching from heaven to earth with angels ascending and descending on it.

The ladder bridged the yawning gulf between man and God. When he woke up, Jacob realized it was a divine visitation. It’s interesting that Jacob’s ladder is never mentioned again in the Old Testament. That is, until Jesus arrives on the scene…

Right after he was baptized, Jesus began proclaiming his true identity and divine mission.

He announced in John 1:51, “I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Jesus was pointing to himself as Jacob’s ladder! He had come to close the distance, to bridge the gaping chasm between God and man.

Just as angels were ascending and descending on the ladder in Jacob’s dream, so they were ascending and descending on the Son of Man, glorifying the One who stretched the gulf between heaven and earth!

We live in a “spiritual” age with many people searching for meaning. As a believer in Jesus, you have the Gospel… you know the Way… you know the Truth: Jesus Christ is man’s only “ladder” to heaven.

Look for opportunities today to help nonbelievers find the first rung on that Ladder. Show them that Jesus has provided a way—the only way—to heaven.

Jesus, thank you for being my Bridge to God, my Stairway to the Father, my Highway to heaven!

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

1 Corinthians 15:58

Ben, would never think of going into spiritual battle alone. When the adversary turns up the heat, Ben reaches out to his brothers in Christ. He has invested years in prayer, Bible study and scripture memorization with a handful of close friends, and he knows these faithful believers will “cover his back” when the devil’s bullets start flying. He calls these men his “band of brothers.”

The line comes from Shakespeare’s account of Henry V at Agincourt. King Henry’s army had been reduced to a small band of tired and weary men. They were outnumbered by the French five to one. But Henry rallies them with these words of inspiration:

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,

This day shall gentle his condition;

And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,

And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us…

Henry took them to victory.

Encourage a weary believer today… go into prayerful battle on his or her behalf… remind your brother or sister in Christ that victory is assured.

This tired and worn down friend needs your help; the fight against the devil is dark and dangerous. We Christians may be few, but we are a happy few. We are fellow warriors with each beside the other. And as long as we stand firm and let nothing move us, our Captain shall take us to victory!

Lord, help me to take my friendships to a deeper level in which prayer, study, confession of sin, honesty, transparency and spiritual openness rally us to your side. Make us aware of the spiritual warfare in which we are engaged today.

MATTHEW 3:13-17

“This is my Son, whom I love. . . .”

Matthew 3:17

When Christians say Jesus is the Son of God, we mean that Jesus is God. But in the Bible, “Son of God” means something unique as well.

In Psalm 2:7, God tells Israel’s king, “You are my son.” So “son of God” refers to Israel’s king. And when Luke gives a family history for Jesus, it goes all the way back to Adam, who is called “the son of God” (Luke 3:38). In the Bible, the human story starts with Adam. So “son of God” refers also to a foundational human being.

When Jesus is baptized, the voice from heaven says, “This is my Son.” God could be making a theological statement, identifying Jesus too as God. But considering what’s ahead for Jesus, that he will be acclaimed and crucified as Israel’s king, could God also be identifying Jesus as king? And since Jesus is still dripping wet, with his clothes clinging to his body, might God also be identifying Jesus as a foundational human being, a new Adam, as a fresh start for humanity?

God and king and human—maybe it all comes together at the river, with the sky torn open, the Spirit descending, and God claiming with pride, “My Son!” I wonder.

Jesus, Son of God, there is more to you than we realize. You are many things all at once. And you are wonderful. Amen.
