Daily Devotional “A Weaned Child”
Be different!
October 24, 2022
My heart is not proud, Lord,
my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.
But I have calmed and quieted myself,
I am like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child I am content.
Israel, put your hope in the Lord
both now and forevermore.
Psalm 131:1-3
My nephew Cody is his mommy’s little boy. He’s a toddler and still enjoys sitting in his mother’s lap and sucking his thumb. He loves to snuggle. My sister-in-law, Carol, says that occasionally, her five-year-old son, Kyle, will want to snuggle, too. It steals Carol’s heart; she nearly cries. It’s one thing for a toddler to want to be close to his mother; you’d expect that. But it’s another thing for a child who has been weaned, who is independent to want to cuddle; it’s something you don’t expect and that makes it all the more precious.
This is what Psalm 131 is all about. It’s one thing to go to God because we want something, much like a baby might want his mother’s breast. But it’s another thing to go to God because you enjoy being close to him…you want to be near. When that happens, Psalm 131 describes us as weaned children with still, calm souls. Not only does it please us to be close to God during those times…it pleases God. It delights him when we desire to draw close to him, feel his embrace, and hear his heartbeat. What more could a child of God want?
When you approach God, would you consider yourself a weaned child as Psalm 131 describes? In what ways today can you show God that you desire to be close to him? Carve out time to recite a favorite hymn or scripture song to the Lord…thank him for little things, like the beauty outside your window, the crisp fall air and colorful leaves.
Lord Jesus, draw me close to you this day and quiet my soul. I love you, Lord Jesus, and want to be near.
