“So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.”

Luke 2:4-5

Imagine it. After nearly 60 miles of rugged dirt roads, Mary and Joseph finally rounded the last corner and paused to overlook the village of Bethlehem.

What was it like for those two moonlit figures? Maybe they stopped just to catch their breath before winding their way down the dark road toward town. Mary, being fully pregnant, was surely relieved to rest for a bit.

Keeping her balance atop a donkey, all those many miles had been exhausting. Perhaps she pressed her hands against her back and straightened, attempting to shift the weight of her Baby off her hips.

The tired couple stepped aside to let a long line of people stream by them, guiding camels and donkeys loaded with supplies. Everyone was arriving for the census. Mary glanced at her husband. They realized that Bethlehem would be crowded.

I like to picture that scene, thinking of Joseph and Mary with such human needs and thoughts. It makes me wonder if Mary – weary, wondering, and uncertain of the path they walked – turned her thoughts toward Psalm 23:

“The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want…

Yea, though I walk through the valley…

thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

Being from Nazareth, Mary probably did not visit Bethlehem very often. But she knew it was the town of David.

And so, if she were frightened, Mary might have comforted herself by whispering the psalm that David had written to chase away his own fears.

And so, picture it: on that last mile into Bethlehem, Mary looks over the hills and glimpses the campfires of the shepherds – we know they were there because just a short while later, the angels would appear to them, announcing Jesus’ birth.

As she gazed out on the shepherds and sheep, I wonder if she thought of the Great Shepherd who was watching over her? I don’t believe it is a stretch to think that Psalm 23 was Mary’s consolation on that uncertain and difficult night.

Which leads me to ask, what uncertainties and discomforts are you facing this season? Is there something that troubles you?

Remember that the One we’re celebrating is the Great Shepherd, the Good Shepherd, the Chief Shepherd. The Bible calls him the True Shepherd.

And you are his lamb. So let the comfort of his presence be yours this harried, hurried season. Let the 23rd Psalm be the Lord’s personal Christmas message for you.

Pray with me: Jesus, I thank you that you are my Shepherd, leading me, comforting me, and providing for me.

You know all the uncertainty I’m facing and the places where I long for assurance. Help me to know your presence along the hard, rugged path I walk today.

A. RENOUNCING MEMBERSHIP OF EVIL ASSOCIATIONS

  1. I reject, revoke and renounce my membership of any of the following
    evil associations.
    Jezebel spirit, Marine spirits, Water spirit, Queen of the Coast,
    Mermaid spirits, Familiar spirits, Witches and Wizards, Spirits of the
    dead and all other occult societies in the name of Jesus.
  2. I withdraw and cancel my name from their registers with the blood of
    Jesus.
  3. I reject and renounce all such names given to me in any of the evil
    associations in the name of Jesus.
  4. I resign my position in any of these associations and withdraw my
    services and responsibilities permanently in the name of Jesus.
  5. I reject all the evil works I have done to innocent people through my
    membership with these evil association and beg the Almighty God to forgive me and wash me clean with the blood of Jesus.
  6. I purge myself of all evil foods I had eaten in any of the evil associations with the blood of Jesus.
  7. I bind you water spirits, marine, queen of the coast, Jezebel spirits,
    familiar spirits operating in my life with hot chains and fetters of God
    and cast you out into the deep, and seal you with unquenchable fire of
    God in the name of Jesus.
  8. I withdraw any part of my body and blood deposited on the evil altars
    in the name of Jesus.
  9. I withdraw my pictures, image and inner-man from the altars and
    covers of the evil associations in the name of Jesus.
  10. I return any of the things of evil associations I am connected with, the
    instruments and any other properties at my disposal for the execution of duties in the name of Jesus.
  11. I hereby confess total separation from the evil associations in the name of Jesus.
  12. Holy Spirit, build a wall of fire round me that will completely make it
    not possible for these evil spirits to come to me again.
  13. I break any covenant binding me with any of these evil associations in the name of Jesus.
  14. I break all inherited covenants and all such covenants I consciously and unconsciously entered into in the name of Jesus.
  15. I bind the demons attached to these covenants and cast them into the
    deep in the name of Jesus.
  16. I resist every attempt to return me back to the evil associations with The blood of Jesus, fire, brimstone and thunder of God.
  17. I renounce and revoke all the oaths I took while entering the evil
    associations in the name of Jesus.
  18. I break and cancel every evil mark, incision, writing placed in my spirit and body as a result of my membership of the evil associations with the blood of Jesus and purify my body, soul and spirit with the Holy Ghost Fire in the name of Jesus.
  19. I break all covenants inherited from my ancestors on the father and
    mother side in the name of Jesus.
  20. Lord break down every evil foundation of my life and rebuild a new one on Christ the Rock.

For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.

If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.

2 Corinthians 1:5-7

Yesterday we saw how your suffering can benefit others. My friend, Jane, was in and out of hospitals constantly before the Lord finally took her home, releasing her from a very painful disease.

Her condition was made more bearable because she was able to witness the impact her testimony had on her nurses and doctors.

There was Charity, the transplant nurse, who was coolheaded in the operating room but coldhearted about spiritual things. Until she met Jane.

Daily Devotional “Avoiding Spiritual Deception”

There was Marge at the nurses’ station who constantly whined about the hospital pay scale and new regulations. Her whining ceased when she became friends with Jane. Others going through menopause or midlife crisis began to see their problems fade, once they spent time with my friend.

Eventually she became completely blind and unable to physically do anything. But Jane didn’t have to worry about feeling useless or having no purpose for living. Through eyes of faith, she knew her suffering was for the comfort, encouragement, and salvation of others.

If you are distressed, it is for the comfort of others. If you are suffering, it has a bearing on the salvation of those who, even at a distance, witness your perseverance.

God invites unbelievers (and a few vacillating believers) to examine the foundations of your faith. Your witness is as bold as the claims upon which your faith rests…and this makes skeptical people think twice about God.

Father and God of all comfort, help me to live in the way of 2 Corinthians 1:5-7 today.

“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me.

Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.”

Philippians 1:21-24

My grandmother lived to be a ripe old age—so old, in fact, that as a teenager I wondered why God allowed her to linger in so much suffering.

Grandmother Landwehr had to leave her cherished home to come live with us. My sister, Jay, moved out of her bedroom and in with Kathy.

My siblings and I ran errands, read to her, and took on extra chores so that my mother would be free to tend to all the extra needs.

Grandmother Landwehr changed our family dynamics; my sisters and I became a lot less self-focused.

As my Lutheran grandmother lay in bed, she probably prayed, “I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far.” But it was more necessary for us—my sisters and I—that she remain. Sometimes our suffering is mostly for the benefit of others. God did not “take my grandmother home” before he had taught us how to serve selflessly.

Was God only “using” my grandmother’s hardship for our benefit? Hardly!

Paul explains later in verses 25 and 26, “Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.”

God accomplished much in my life through Grandmom…and it’s all to her account.

Lord, help me to understand that my suffering can—and does—benefit others. Help me to see that’s the more necessary thing.

I heard the bells on Christmas day, their old familiar carols play…

Those “old familiar carols” are becoming harder and harder to find these days.

Our contemporary culture is waging an all-out war against the true meaning of Christmas.

I especially notice it in the music on the radio and in the stores. I hear plenty of songs about silver bells, jingle bells, and sleigh bells, but not a whisper about the church bells that announce the birth of the Babe in the manger.

Melodic, rich, and deep, the true carols of Christmas have spoken for centuries to countless generations, informing people of the real reason behind this holy day.

I used to sing carols by rote. In seasons past, I would put myself on automatic pilot and just let the music carry me. At other times, the tune became the focus and I would work hard to get the harmony just right.

I admit there were many times when I would gloss over the power-packed truth in each stanza. Not this year!

No more am I taking Christmas carols for granted. It’s because they’re becoming so rare. I am savoring and treasuring each line of every carol I gladly lift to the Lord.

I encourage you on this Christmas Day to do the same. Ask the Spirit to quicken the words, illumine your understanding of the Christmas text, and make your worship of him pure and purposeful as you sing.

Pray that others around you will sing the same way! If the media and the malls can bend over backwards to take Christ out of Christmas, then we who believe in the Lord Jesus can more than match their energy.

Lord, as our world and culture grow darker, I pray that we your people, with happy hearts, in glad song, and in holy worship would shine all the brighter in contrast.
