“Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”

As time passes and followers of Jesus grow older, we are moving in two directions at the same time.

Today’s Scripture affirms, “We do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”

Do you see the two directions in this passage?

On the one hand, our physical abilities and strength diminish with the passing years.

You can feel it—whether you are thirty or eighty. On the other hand, if we are walking with Christ, experiencing the renewal of his Spirit, our spiritual abilities and strength increase every day.

This process goes on until our physical life gives out. But in that very instant, our new life in heaven begins.

So if you’re feeling a few aches and pains, no matter what age you are, remember that outwardly, you will fade, but inwardly, the flame in your spirit will burn brighter and brighter until God says, “It’s time, dear child. Come on home, now.”

Thank You, Lord, for renewing my life day by day through your Word and your Holy Spirit.

The pain and physical struggles of today remind me of a soon tomorrow when I will be forever young and strong and filled with joy in your presence.

“My soul clings to you;

your right hand upholds me.”

Psalm 63:8

If you’ve had a long day or a nonstop, high-pressured week, you can open your Bible almost in the middle and find indescribable reassurance in these ten words:

“My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.” Consider all the things God does with his hands.

He has carved out beds for great rivers, puckered up mountain ranges, ladled out seas, and dug channels for molten lava.

We’re talking here about very strong hands. But they are also gentle.

The hands of Jesus touched a man with leprosy and made him whole, swept across blind eyes and made them see, and took the cold, dead hand of a little girl and raised her up alive.

In the end, those hands were outstretched on a rough wooden beam and pierced with sharp Roman spikes for our eternal salvation.

Right now, Jesus upholds you with his right hand. Pause, consider that, and give him praise. And then rest.

Father, I remember how David said, “You are my God. My times are in your hands.”

You cradle my days, my nights, my very life, and my eternal destiny in those hands.

You shield me, comfort me, and guide me. No matter what crosses my path today, I am safe in your hands.

“Cast your bread upon the waters,

for you will find it after many days.”

Ecclesiastes 11:1

King Solomon wrote, “Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.”

What did he mean? Here’s how I read it: When God gives you some extraordinary blessing, don’t clutch it with a white-knuckled grip, or you may destroy the very thing that makes it a blessing to you.

The poet William Blake wrote, “He who binds to himself a joy, does the winged life destroy; but he who kisses the joy as it flies lives in eternity’s sunrise.”

Hold life’s blessings loosely. Be thankful for the people, places, and situations God brings into your life today, but also be willing to let the blessings go, should God choose to take them away.

One day he will return what he has removed—or replace it with something better.

Lord, I have lost much in life, but I have gained more. And what I have lost isn’t really lost; it’s just gone ahead of me.

Help me to cling to you, the Giver, rather than to the beautiful gifts you’ve given me in your kindness and love.

With your help, I open my hands and release my grip.

“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.

For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.

And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.”

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

On a day when discouragement steals across your life like an afternoon shadow, it’s a good time to stash your smartphone, turn off the TV, open your Bible, and read today’s Scripture.

Let the words flow across your soul. Read them out loud. One day, there will be a great shout—the actual voice of a mighty archangel—and the clear call of a trumpet.

Then, in a single heartbeat, we will actually be with the Lord—and with all the believers who have gone before us.

It will be forever! Paul concludes, “Therefore encourage one another with these words.”

So if your anxieties have been pulling you down or your situation is coloring your world blue, take courage from these truths.

And then go out and encourage someone else. Sometimes people have been looking down for so long that they need just a little nudge to look up.

Dear God, I get so excited with the reality that you could call me at any moment.

One minute, I’ll be in room—and in a single blink, I’ll be with you in the air, dancing in the clouds, embracing my dad and mom and so many wonderful friends who have already crossed over. I must wait for that moment, but really, I can’t wait!

We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.

When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.

2 Corinthians 10:12

Sometimes we like to imagine swapping lives with others—lives that look more attractive and desirable than our own.

The cleaned-up, airbrushed impression we get on social media makes us envious of their opportunities, their marriage, their vacations, or their families.

But the truth is, we really don’t know what’s inside their lives, behind those smiling “selfies” they post.

At the same time, we tend to forget our own inside story. We forget how God has equipped and enabled us with special abilities to cope, grow, and thrive through life’s challenges.

We forget the loyal friends and wonderful people he has placed around us and the many times he has helped us, encouraged us, forgiven us, and pulled us out of trouble.

We forget the incomparable, eternal purposes he has for our lives. Would we really want to swap places with someone else?

How much better to be thankful and content with God’s provision!

Lord, please forgive me for allowing envy into my heart.

Forgive me for comparing myself, my opportunities, and my circumstances to the superficial impressions I have of other people’s situations.

Forgive me for so quickly forgetting all of your many kindnesses, miraculous provisions, Holy Spirit-inspired insights, and songs in the night.

Thank you for making me who I am and placing me where I am.

Job 2:10

Yesterday you woke up happy and hopeful, the chronic pain evaporated like morning mist; your family was cheerful at breakfast; or God spoke so clearly to you in his Word. But today?

The pain has returned; you had sharp words with your spouse; or God seemed to be vacationing in the Bahamas.

It could all be discouraging, until you remember the words of Job in today’s Scripture: “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”

In other words, God himself is good and worthy of praise, and we will give thanks to him for whatever the day brings.

But in the meantime, don’t forget to value and treasure the days that are simply normal.

Mary Jean Irion writes, “Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are . . . let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow.”

Today will soon enough become yesterday. Don’t let it slip away without thanks.

Father, I praise you for the gift of today. I know it will never come again.

I thank you for life—for another twenty-four hours to know you, to walk with you, and to let you touch other lives through me.

It’s only one day, Lord. But right now, it’s the only day that matters.

“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”

Matthew 6:34, NLT

How do we keep going when we are hurting? How do we live?

A friend once gave me some advice about living with chronic pain: Just do the next thing.

In other words, don’t try to wrap your mind around a long season—or a lifetime—of discomfort and pain; just tackle the next hour, the next day, the next night.

As Jesus said, “Don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”

If you are dealing with any kind of pain today, just do the next thing.

It may mean getting out of bed, getting up off the couch, getting out of the house, doing the laundry, or washing the dishes in the sink.

Revelation 21:4 reminds us that very soon there will be no more night, pain, or tears. So press on as best you can and lean helplessly into his arms. You can do no more—and you can do no less.

Thank you, Lord Jesus, for reminding me that I only need to concern myself with living one day at a time, one hour at a time. I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but I know that whatever it may be, you will be there with me. And that’s all I need to know.

“Do you not know?

Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God,

the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He will not grow tired or weary,

and his understanding no one can fathom.

He gives strength to the weary

and increases the power of the weak.

Even youths grow tired and weary,

and young men stumble and fall;

but those who hope in the Lord

will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

they will run and not grow weary, 

they will walk and not be faint.”

Isaiah 40:28-31

It’s very difficult to move forward when you’re locked up in physical or emotional pain.

In such moments, it’s a comfort to remember that the love of Jesus toward you and me can never be exhausted.

He gives and gives and gives. Look at a typical day in His life.

In Matthew 14, after a hot, dusty afternoon of preaching to the crowds, Jesus learns the devastating news about the beheading of his friend and cousin, John the Baptist.

But rather than taking time to grieve, Jesus attends to the needs at hand, feeding five thousand people.

Then he later rescues his disciples when a storm blindsides their boat. On the other side of the lake, he takes on more crowds and nonstop ministry with no sleep.

And so it is today. Jesus’ love for you is endless. His concern never falters.

He never tires of your journey. Jesus, your inexhaustible Friend, can carry your load today.

Such a Friend! Praise you, Jesus, for your strong arm around my shoulders through the demands of my day and the occasional sleepless night.

Thank you that even though I come to the end of my rope, your rope has no end or limit! I find rest, sweet rest in you today.

“So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!”

1 Corinthians 10:12

Have you ever seen a fellow believer fall into deep sin and thought to yourself, I would never do that?

Maybe a prominent Christian has made the news for embezzling funds or abandoning his or her wedding vows.

When you hear the news, you shake your head and say, “How could someone do such a thing?”

Today’s Scripture has good counsel for all of us when we imagine ourselves to be above certain sins: “If you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!”

In other words, don’t be proud or smug when others sin, because you are not as strong, courageous, and godly as you think you are.

Consider Noah, who stood firm in a land filled with sin—only to become drunk and disgraced in his own tent.

Your greatest temptation doesn’t come when you feel weak and vulnerable, but rather when you feel strong, devoted, and above the fray.

Father, I know I have done this. I have seen brothers and sisters stumble, shaken my head, and thought to myself, How could they?

But you know the truth, God. You know that sometimes I have avoided sin, not because I’m more devout, but because I lacked opportunity!

Father, I admit my weakness today. I want to be strong in you—not in myself!

Even now my witness is in heaven;

my advocate is on high.

My intercessor is my friend

as my eyes pour out tears to God;

on behalf of a man he pleads with God

as one pleads for a friend.

Job 16:19-21

Job looks up through a fog of grief and pain and sees something in a flash of spiritual insight.

He cries out, “Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high.

My intercessor is my friend . . . on behalf of a man he pleads with God as one pleads for a friend.” I love those two words—“even now.”

Whatever your life situation at this very moment, even now, you have a Witness, an Advocate, an Intercessor, and a Friend in heaven, making the case for you before the Father.

That Friend is Jesus himself, the Son of God and Creator of all. Whatever your circumstance, doctor’s prognosis, level of pain, bank balance, or earthly trouble, you have a mighty Witness in heaven who is completely tuned in to your situation and prays for you.

Even now, Lord Jesus, I don’t have to wait in line for your attention, earn your notice, work for your favor, or cry out endlessly for your mercy. Even now, you are my Advocate, pleading with God the Father on my behalf.

As best I know how, I will rest in your love today and trust you to do what’s best for me.
