Even now my witness is in heaven;

my advocate is on high.

My intercessor is my friend

as my eyes pour out tears to God;

on behalf of a man he pleads with God

as one pleads for a friend.

Job 16:19-21

Job looks up through a fog of grief and pain and sees something in a flash of spiritual insight.

He cries out, “Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high.

My intercessor is my friend . . . on behalf of a man he pleads with God as one pleads for a friend.” I love those two words—“even now.”

Whatever your life situation at this very moment, even now, you have a Witness, an Advocate, an Intercessor, and a Friend in heaven, making the case for you before the Father.

That Friend is Jesus himself, the Son of God and Creator of all. Whatever your circumstance, doctor’s prognosis, level of pain, bank balance, or earthly trouble, you have a mighty Witness in heaven who is completely tuned in to your situation and prays for you.

Even now, Lord Jesus, I don’t have to wait in line for your attention, earn your notice, work for your favor, or cry out endlessly for your mercy. Even now, you are my Advocate, pleading with God the Father on my behalf.

As best I know how, I will rest in your love today and trust you to do what’s best for me.

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you.

Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

1 Corinthians 15:58

Some people imagine that menial, mundane tasks don’t rate very high in the Lord’s service—whether it’s cleaning up in the church kitchen, setting out Communion cups, or changing the oil on an elderly widow’s car.

But no task undertaken for the Lord is ever commonplace, undervalued, or wasted.

Today’s Scripture reads, “Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord . . . your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

In other words, what you do for God—desiring to please him and serve his people—counts.

It makes a difference, not only here and now, but on the other side, in eternity. Could it be that angels observe our determination, sacrifice, and the hours we invest in his work?

One thing is for certain: God himself sees and takes note. And what you do for him today may have far greater implications than you could ever begin to imagine.

Lord, how good it is to remember that nothing escapes your notice. Every task I have ever attempted for you, every time I worked through my pain, every time I set aside something I wanted in order to do what you wanted, has been recorded in heaven.

I may feel many things in my life, but I should never, ever feel overlooked.

“That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him.”

Esther 6:1

One night, Xerxes, emperor of the mighty Persian Empire, couldn’t sleep.

This may seem like a random, trivial fact—but it’s not. That one night of royal insomnia set off a whole chain of events that eventually saved Queen Esther and the whole Jewish population from destruction—while decimating their enemies.

It’s a reminder of how God delights to arrange “coincidences” to advance his purposes.

He uses the most innocuous, everyday events to engineer the most earth-shattering and significant moments in your life.

As Pastor John Piper wrote, “God is always doing 10,000 things in your life, and you may be aware of three of them.”

Is your heart open today? Watch for his sovereign hand at work in every life situation and praise him for how each incident weaves its way into his marvelous plan.

Dear Lord, how inexpressibly comforting this is! To think I can trust you with all the details of my life—right down to the frustrating delays, health setbacks, traffic jams, missed flights, and unexpected glitches.

Your watch-care over my life is wonderful. Why should I be anxious or discouraged? I praise You for being Lord over all of my life.

“Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus.

But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, ‘This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.’

Then Jesus told them this parable: ‘Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them.

Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?

And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, “Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.”

I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.’”

Luke 15:1-7

Jesus describes a shepherd who leaves ninety-nine sheep out in open country to seek a lost one.

On the surface, that doesn’t seem like wise livestock management. What rancher turns his back on an entire flock to scour the terrain for one foolish, wandering animal? Jesus does.

Yes, he loves the ninety-nine, but his heart yearns for the missing sheep, the one in eternal peril.

After searching high and low, the shepherd finally finds the stray and carries it home on his shoulders.

In his great joy, he even calls friends to come celebrate with him. This is how much Jesus loves and longs for that lost one you’ve been praying over for so long.

Yes, maybe he or she is a rebel in whom others see no worth. The Good Shepherd, however, will never stop searching and calling.

And that’s why we should never, ever stop praying for and loving those who are lost.

Jesus, forgive me for giving up on people who have rejected you and hardened their hearts against you.

Sometimes I write people off as a bad investment, but you never do.

Help me not to shrug my shoulders about those who choose to ignore you or oppose you and wander into darkness. Give me a heart like yours, Great Shepherd.

“But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.”

1 Corinthians 12:18

Sometime ago I travel To a village, speaking at a church, a woman named Elizabeth who is blind served as my interpreter.

You can imagine the two of us on stage—me with my difficulty in walking and Elizabeth with her white cane.

During a break, someone placed an English language magazine on my lap. It looked like a good read, but with my Current situation, I couldn’t hold the periodical or turn its pages.

“Elizabeth,” I said, “how ’bout if you hold the magazine and turn the pages, and I will read out loud.

That way we can both enjoy it.” And that’s just what we did. I needed her; she needed me; and together we accomplished something that blessed both of us.

That is how the body of Christ should work! Our combined weaknesses become delightful strengths.

First Corinthians 12 describes how we all need each other, just as a physical body needs feet, hands, ears, and eyes to move forward.

If we isolate from other Christians, we impoverish them—and ourselves.

Lord, keep my mind from filling up with details about myself, my wants, my needs, my deadlines, and my schedule.

Remind me of those I might help today with the abilities and gifts you have given me. If someone needs a positive word or a listening ear, move me to take notice . . . and take the time to respond.

an ever-present help in trouble.”

Psalm 46:1

Nothing is more suffocating, more soul stifling, than feelings of hopelessness.

Despair can seep into your soul like floodwaters into a basement.

We’ve all been there when hope seems so very faint. But true hope is not a feeling; it is a fact firmly rooted in eternal truth.

God never loses sight of you, never becomes distracted from your life, never misplaces your file, never allows you to slide off his radar for a single instant.

When troubles come, he doesn’t back away, giving Satan a free hand to harass you.

In today’s Scripture, we read, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

When you are in trouble, God doesn’t just send help; he is your help. And this help is ever-present.

God is closer than your troubles and stronger than your fears. Fix your thoughts on him, and he will sustain you.

I’m so thankful, dear Lord, that you don’t come and go in my life like a fitful breeze or a preoccupied friend.

You are always here. Always in reach. Always listening. Always concerned.

Always ready to help. Guard my heart, I pray, from the infection of despair. And may your hope—your living hope—flow from me to others.

Daily Devotional “Seeing the Truth of Christmas”

Daily Devotional
Be different!
December 23, 2022

“For my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”

Luke 2:30-32

Christmas cards are arriving in the mailbox and with each sentiment on every card, joy is rising. Even as I write, I’m listening to “Joy to the World” on Pandora and the words keep fanning even more joy. Across the living room, my friend is wrapping my Christmas presents I’ll be giving to family; just watching her skill with ribbon and wrapping paper brings a smile. There’s something inexplicably charming and other-worldly about Christmas. Crisp nights and tiny twinkling lights, hot cocoa and coffees, and friends at your front door bearing gifts and a fresh wreath… oh, the wonder of it all!

That’s a good word for it: Christmas is filled with wonder. It’s a feeling experienced by even those who do not know Christ. It’s something even unbelievers sense this time of year.

How is that possible?

David Mathis says in his book The Christmas We Didn’t Expect, that all people sense this enchantment because “at the very heart [of Christmas] is the essence of the supernatural: God himself entering our realm. At Christmas, God ‘came down,’ not just to observe human sin and inflict righteous judgment from the outside, but to be human and work his mercy from the inside.”

So why does Christmas still have this magnetism in a world that tries everything it can to empty it of its true meaning? Because even people who do not know Christ sense something profoundly different about this splendid time of year. David Mathis adds, “Even non-believers sense that the real magic of Christmas is not in gifts and goodies… or homespun traditions with indoor coziness and outdoor snow. What lies at the heart of Christmas, and whispers to every soul is the most stunning and significant fact that God himself became one of us.”

And yet people who deny Christ try to “suppress this truth” as it says in Romans 1:18. The truth about Christmas is so evident in the words to Christmas carols and more. People who don’t believe know that Christmas is different. They realize something is happening that’s beyond them because

“since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse” (Romans 1:18-20).

So, people don’t even need a Christmas card or carol. They can look up into the brilliant night sky. They can wake up in the morning, step outside and everything they see is an expression of God’s invisible qualities. People know that, but they suppress it.

This season, help your unsaved neighbors and friends to recognize the truth, the stunning fact that God himself came to rescue them. Oh, the wonder of it all!

Pray with me: Dear God, I ask that you would have mercy on my loved ones and friends who have suppressed the truth of Christmas.

Help me to further announce the truth of your eternal power and divine nature. I ask that the wonder of the Christmas season would draw those around me ever closer to the Truth.

“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

‘Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!’”

Luke 2:13-14 (NKJV)

I heard the bells on Christmas day, their old familiar carols play…

Those “old familiar carols” are becoming harder and harder to find these days.

Our contemporary culture is waging an all-out war against the true meaning of Christmas.

I especially notice it in the music on the radio and in the stores. I hear plenty of songs about silver bells, jingle bells, and sleigh bells, but not a whisper about the church bells that announce the birth of the Babe in the manger.

Melodic, rich, and deep, the true carols of Christmas have spoken for centuries to countless generations, informing people of the real reason behind this holy day.

I used to sing carols by rote. In seasons past, I would put myself on automatic pilot and just let the music carry me. At other times, the tune became the focus and I would work hard to get the harmony just right.

I admit there were many times when I would gloss over the power-packed truth in each stanza. Not this year!

No more am I taking Christmas carols for granted. It’s because they’re becoming so rare. I am savoring and treasuring each line of every carol I gladly lift to the Lord.

I encourage you on this Christmas Day to do the same. Ask the Spirit to quicken the words, illumine your understanding of the Christmas text, and make your worship of him pure and purposeful as you sing.

Pray that others around you will sing the same way! If the media and the malls can bend over backwards to take Christ out of Christmas, then we who believe in the Lord Jesus can more than match their energy.

Lord, as our world and culture grow darker, I pray that we your people, with happy hearts, in glad song, and in holy worship would shine all the brighter in contrast.
