“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

1 Corinthians 1:18

Isn’t it odd that we wear crosses around our necks? A cross is a symbol of torture. Like wearing a little guillotine, or an electric chair around your neck.

So, why is the cross different? Well, many amazing things happened on the cross, but one is that Jesus exchanged its meaning.

Christ’s resurrection turned the cross from a symbol of torture into a symbol of life.

And Jesus exchanges the meaning of our suffering in the same way.

Like, my current situation is no longer a symbol of pain and confinement; it’s a symbol of freedom and life because every day my pain keeps me leaning very hard on God.

And that’s a life-giving thing. Today, view your pain and problems through the lens of the cross and ask Jesus to exchange their meaning.

The good news?… you will find hope in your hardship.

Matthew 11:28 that reads, “Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.”

“Gold there is, and rubies in abundance,

but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel.”

Proverbs 20:15

Have you ever received a note or card at just the right time with just the right word of encouragement?

It’s like getting a message straight from heaven, isn’t it? In Proverbs, Solomon writes, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.”

We may minimize the words we speak or the efforts we make to lift someone’s heart or brighten someone’s day, but in God’s hands, those few words can make a world of difference.

Just as careless, sarcastic, or dismissive words have the capacity to damage, warp, and kill, so a word of kindness—“a word fitly spoken”—can change the course of a day . . . or a life.

Knowing this, why don’t we practice it even more? A notecard in the mail, a well-timed affirmation, or even a thoughtful email to a struggling soul may be among the most significant things you will accomplish—today or ever.

Thank you, Father, for those who have written timely notes or spoken words of hope and life to me through the years.

Holy Spirit, show me where and how and when I can do this for others—both your sons and daughters and those who are (for now) outside your family.

I don’t want to “just talk”; I want to speak words that you can use.

“’Alas, Sovereign Lord,’ I said, ‘I do not know how to speak; I am too young.’

But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, “I am too young.” You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the Lord.

Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, ‘I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.’”

Jeremiah 1:6-10

Do you ever feel like God has called others to big plans, big visions, and important roles in his kingdom, but you’re just not cut out for it? That is what Jeremiah thought.

When God called his number, Jeremiah protested, claiming he was too young—and a poor speaker besides. But the Lord replied, “Do not say, ‘I am too young’ . . . for I am with you . . . I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”

What a grand-scale vision! Speak for God? Confront nations? Overturn realms? Build and plant in remote corners of the earth?

It seems like too much for you and me too, doesn’t it? We shrink from the task, thinking, That’s too big. Too grandiose. I can’t handle that! Yes, you can! And this very day, God is calling you to a great role, bold prayers, and mighty deeds for Christ’s kingdom.

Dear Lord, please don’t let the enemy shrink my vision of life in Christ into something small, modest, and manageable. Lift my heart today, Holy Spirit, as you show me ways I can touch a hurting world through my prayers—and with whatever else you place in my hand to do.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Hebrews 12:1-2

When someone holds on to joy in spite of everything, I call that “defiant joy.” A person with defiant joy refuses to be squelched by negative voices or intimidated by overwhelming odds.

In Jesus, we have the greatest example anyone could imagine. Today’s Scripture says, “For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

The joy born out of suffering is unflinching in the face of discouragement; it is unshakable when your pain screams at you to choose doubt and fear.

Joy is a gift of the Holy Spirit that is far more durable, rigorous, and rugged than most of us realize.

So, when you pick up your cross every day, do so without wavering. Because as you do, you’ll also be choosing joy.

Jesus, I am humbled—and in awe—to think you would willingly endure betrayal, the terrors of the cross, and the dark stain of all my sin.

And somehow, you saw joy beyond it all. You knew your suffering would purchase my rescue from death and open the doors of eternal life for me.

Teach me, Lord, to look beyond today’s pain to see heaven on the horizon.

“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

Philippians 1:21

There is a statement I have repeated again and again through the years: “I would rather be in this place knowing Jesus than being at other places without him.”

It’s still true. The joy, hope, and peace I experience—not in spite of but because of my —is so much more fulfilling and satisfying than having feet that walk and run, and hands that hold, touch, and feel.

The apostle Paul really sums it up for me: “For of him and through him and to him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.”

My friend, all things—even walking or not walking—find their end in Christ. To be with him in life is everything.

I’d rather be in the storm with Christ than in calm waters alone. As Paul wrote in today’s Scripture, “For to me, to live is Christ.”

I wouldn’t trade what I have in Christ for any other situation.

Lord Jesus, it hasn’t been an easy life. At times I could have said with the apostle Paul, “We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself.”

This is true, but even so, nothing, nothing compares to having you, the Son of God, as my Companion, Savior, Helper, and Friend.

But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep.

When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth.

When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it.

Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.

The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”

Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.”

1 Samuel 17:34-37

Calm and matter-of-fact, the shepherd boy David described his experiences with wild animals in the wilderness:

“When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep . . . When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it.”

David went after the lions in his life. Rather than hiding from them or cowering at their approach, he pursued them.

His courage tells me not to be afraid of my adversary, the devil, when lion-sized trials, heartaches, and difficulties come looking to destroy my faith or tear apart my peace of mind (Spurgeon).

We can face our troubles head-on, my friend. Each trial gives us a chance to demonstrate to an unbelieving world that Jesus, the Lion of Judah, is greater than any adversary.

In him we are strong. We are overcomers. We are victorious.

Dear Lord, I need the courage of David today. There are lions in my life too! I can see them crouching in the shadows.

Sometimes everything in me wants to run, hide, deny, or cower in fear. Please give me the strength to face those adversaries and take them on in your strong name.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Galatians 6:9-10

A careful vineyard owner watches with great attention for signs of budding fruit. He has spent months tilling, fertilizing, pruning, watering, and testing. And now he is expecting his vines to bear big, luscious, prize-winning grapes. Don’t think the Almighty is any less meticulous.

He wants you to bear much fruit. He notices every time you sow seeds in the lives of others. He keeps tabs every time you water that seed with prayer.

He takes note when faith flowers and fruit ripens in the life of someone in whom you have invested for Jesus’ sake.

If they are rewarded, you reap. If they are lifted up, you are raised with them. Be vigilant about people in your spheres of influence.

You are sowing seeds; your prayers are having an impact; and the Lord of the vineyard is paying close attention.

Lord, I see so clearly today that my life in you is all about investing in others. If I lose my life for your sake, I find it as never before! Please show me how to invest wisely, giving my words, my time, my specific prayers, my concern, my full attention, my practical help, my smiles of encouragement, and love that is rooted in you.

“But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘Today,’ so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”

Hebrews 3:13

Many who struggle with severe disabilities, chronic pain, grief, or depression find themselves with a short battery life of encouragement.

One day might find them cruising along on an even keel, and the next day all of that hope seems to evaporate.

Today’s Scripture acknowledges this, with the writer challenging us to “encourage one another daily . . . so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”

The truth is, we all need daily encouragement from others when it comes to keeping a positive outlook.

If we don’t find that encouragement, the Bible says we’re in danger of being hardened—not only by sin, but also by cynicism, bitterness, or despair.

We need other hope-filled believers in our lives, friends who can lift us with wise words and reminders of God’s goodness, grace, and power.

We also need to be that kind of encourager, speaking confident words and letting that hope put a smile on someone else’s face.

Lord, thank You for the amazing encouragers You have placed in my life through the years.

I praise You for all those expressions of solid truth that lifted my heart and kept me from giving up in despair.

I ask for the opportunity today to speak such words of hope into someone else’s life.

See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;

your walls are ever before me.

Isaiah 49:16

When you were in elementary school, did you ever take a pen and write the name of someone on the palm of your hand? Maybe it was a boy or girl you liked—or someone you especially admired.

The truth is, God has done this as well, only he has taken it a giant step further. In today’s Scripture, he says, “See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.”

In other words, he doesn’t just engrave your name on his palms, but he engraves you.

It’s all there—everything about you—your hopes and dreams, faults and failures, fears and anxieties, everything that makes up who you are.

He’s not just holding you; he closes his hands and feels the impression, the precious one-of-a-kind engraving. You are a part of him, and he will never, ever overlook you and your needs.

Father, this is almost too much for me to process.
You have placed me where you will always see me and set me where you will always remember me. Nothing about me escapes your gaze.

Others may look past me, forget to pray for me, or neglect to even notice me, but you never will. Not today, not tomorrow, not in a million years.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.

My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.

Psalm 42:5-6

Arguing is usually a big waste of time and energy, but there is something to be said for arguing with yourself.

In fact, that’s a very biblical thing to do. Go ahead and speak truth and hope into your own soul! That’s what the psalmist did.

When he was in distress and felt himself slipping into a dark place, he spoke directly to his own heart: “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me?

Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”

Maybe you’ve been listening to too many negative, hopeless voices . . . on the nightly news . . . in the car pool . . . or on the phone with your friends.

Maybe the evil one has been whispering words of death, defeat, and futility into your ear. It’s time to set the record straight!

Declare the truth about who you are in Christ. Remind your soul that Jesus is your help and hope, that the Father deeply loves you, and that your future is secure in heaven.

Dear Lord Jesus, I’ve listened too long to cynical words, dark thoughts—and anxieties that buzz around my head like bees.

Help me to speak life and peace into my own soul by the power of your indwelling Holy Spirit.
