Daily Devotional “Living Courageously”

Be different!

May 30, 2023

The twelve apostles included “Thaddaeus” (Matthew. 10:3).

Victorious Christian living requires great courage.

Thaddaeus was a man of many identities.

In the King James translation of Matthew 10:3 he is called “Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus.”

He is also called “Judas the son of James” (Luke 6:16; Acts 1:13) and “Judas (not Iscariot)” (John 14:22).

Judas, which means “Jehovah leads,” was probably the name given him at birth, with Thaddaeus and Lebbaeus added later as nicknames to reflect his character.

Apparently Thaddaeus was the nickname given to him by his family.

It comes from a Hebrew root word that refers to the female breast.

Basically it means a “breast-child.”

Perhaps Thaddaeus was the youngest child in the family or especially dear to his mother.

Lebbaeus comes from a Hebrew root that means “heart.”

Literally it means a “heart-child,” and speaks of someone who is courageous.

That nickname was likely given him by his friends, who saw him as a man of boldness and courage.

Early church tradition tells us that Thaddaeus was tremendously gifted with the power of God to heal the sick.

It is said that a certain Syrian king named Adgar was very ill and sent for Thaddaeus to come and heal him.

On his way to the king, Thaddaeus reportedly healed hundreds of people throughout Syria.

When he finally reached the king, he healed him then preached Christ to him.

As a result, the king became a Christian.

The country, however, was thrown into chaos, and a vengeful nephew of the king had Thaddaeus imprisoned then beaten to death with a club.

If that tradition is true, it confirms that Thaddaeus was a man of great courage.

It takes courage to die for Christ but it also takes courage to live for Him.

That’s why Paul said that God hasn’t given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline (2 Timothy. 1:7).

Each day trust in God’s promises and rely on His Spirit.

That’s how you can face each new challenge with courage and confidence.

Prayer

Thank God for the courage He has given you in the past and ask Him to help you face future spiritual battles without retreat or compromise.

Daily Devotional “Saluting An Unknown Soldier”

Daily Devotional “Saluting An Unknown Soldier”
Be different!
May 29, 2023

The twelve apostles included “James the son of Alphaeus” (Matthew. 10:3).

God often uses ordinary people to accomplish great things.

Like most Christians, James the son of Alphaeus is an unknown and unsung soldier of the cross.

His distinguishing characteristic is obscurity.

Nothing he did or said is recorded in Scripture—only his name.

In Mark 15:40 he is called “James the Less,” which literally means “Little James.”

That could refer to his stature (he might have been short), his age (he might have been younger than James the son of Zebedee), or his influence (he might have had relatively little influence among the disciples).

In Mark 2:14 Matthew (Levi) is called the son of Alphaeus.

Alphaeus was a common name, but it’s possible that James and Matthew were brothers, since their fathers had the same first name.

Also, James’s mother is mentioned in Mark 15:40 as being present at Christ’s crucifixion, along with other women.

She is referred to as the wife of Clopas in John 19:25.

Since Clopas was a form of Alphaeus, that further supports the possibility that James and Matthew were related.

From those references we might conclude that James was a small young man whose personality was not particularly powerful.

If he was Matthew’s brother, perhaps he was as humble as Matthew, willing to serve the Lord without any applause or notice.

Whichever the case, be encouraged that God uses obscure people like James, and rewards them accordingly.

Someday James will sit on a throne in Christ’s millennial kingdom, judging the twelve tribes of Israel—just like the other more prominent disciples (Luke 22:30).

No matter how obscure or prominent you are from a human perspective, God can use you and will reward you with a glorious eternal inheritance.

Prayer

•Thank the Lord for all those people unknown to you whom He has used to shape your life for His glory.
•Seek to be more like James, serving Christ faithfully without applause or glory.

Further Reading

•Read Luke 9:23-25. What did Jesus say is necessary to be His disciple?
•Read Luke 9:57-62. What were those men unwilling to give up to follow Christ?

Daily Devotional “Avoiding Prejudice”

Daily Devotional “Avoiding Prejudice”

Be The Difference God Require!

May 28, 2023

The twelve apostles included “Bartholomew [Nathanael]” (Matthew. 10:3).

Prejudice can destroy relationships and prevent people from coming to Christ.

Prejudice is an uncalled-for generalization based on feelings of superiority.

It is an ugly sin that has fueled hatred and conflicts for centuries, dividing entire nations and bringing untold misery.

But prejudice is most damning when it blinds people to God’s Word.

The prophet Jonah was so prejudiced against the Assyrians, he refused to go to Nineveh to preach to them.

Even after God convinced him to obey, he wanted to die because the people of Nineveh had repented and God had spared them.

Prejudice also reared its ugly head in Nathanael, whose last name was Bartholomew (meaning “son of Tolmai”).

John 1:45-46 says, “Philip found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

And Nathanael said to him, ‘Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?'”

Nathanael was a student of the Word and was looking for the Messiah, but he couldn’t understand how Messiah could come from Nazareth.

Nazareth lay on the fringes of the Jewish world—the last stop before Gentile territory.

Perhaps the people of Cana, Nathanael’s hometown, were more refined and educated than the people of Nazareth.

Whatever the cause, Nathanael’s perspective seemed to be that nothing but trouble could come out of Nazareth.

Prejudice has blinded many people to the gospel.

The Jewish religious leaders rejected Jesus because He didn’t fit their idea of a Messiah, wasn’t from Jerusalem, and wasn’t trained in their synagogues.

Fortunately Nathanael’s desire for truth overpowered his prejudice and he came to Jesus.

Perhaps you have family or friends who are resisting the gospel because of prejudice.

If so, don’t be discouraged and don’t give up!

Jesus broke through Nathanael’s prejudice and redeemed him, and He has done the same for millions of others.

Prayer

•Pray for those you know who are blinded by prejudice, asking God to open their spiritual eyes to His truth.
•Confess any prejudice you might have in your own heart.

Further Reading

Practicing unity and humility is the best way to overcome prejudice within the Body of Christ. Read Ephesians 4:1-6 and Philippians 2:1-8.

“‘Thou art the same, and Thy years will not come to an end’” (Psalm 102:27).

God never changes, so He can be trusted to do what He says.

God alone is unchanging (or as the theologians say, immutable). The psalmist says, “Even [the heavens and earth] will perish, but Thou dost endure. . . . Thou art the same, and Thy years will not come to an end” (Psalm. 102:26-27).

Though Israel deserved destruction for its sin, God was faithful to His covenant with Abraham, saying, “I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed” (Malachi. 3:6).

James calls God “the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow” (1:17).

What about those verses that say God changed His mind (e.g., Amos 7:3-6; Jonah 3:10)? Let’s look at an example. Jonah warned the wicked city of Nineveh of impending judgment.

The city immediately repented, and “when God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them.

And He did not do it” (3:10). Who changed? The people of Nineveh! God’s nature to punish evil and reward good remained the same, but the object changed.

You can’t blame the sun for melting the wax and hardening the clay. The problem is in the substance of the wax and clay, not in the sun.

In a similar way, our standing before God determines how God acts toward us.

What does God’s unchanging character mean? To unbelievers, it means judgment.

When God says, “The person who sins will die” (Ezekiel. 18:20) and “The wages of sin is death” (Romans. 6:23), He means it.

When He says Hell is eternal (Matthew. 25:46; Revelation. 20:10, 13-15), then it is.

To Christians, His immutability means comfort. If He loved me in the past, He loves me now and forever.

If He forgave and saved me, He did so forever. If He promised me anything, His promise stands forever.

If the Bible says, “My God shall supply all your needs” (Philippians. 4:19), we know the power that supplied Paul’s needs is the same power that will supply ours.

God told Israel, “I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah. 31:3), and His love for us is the same.

Prayer Suggestions

Praise God for His immutability, and thank Him for the comfort that brings you.

Further Learning

Find some promises God makes to His children in Scripture, and ask for faith to believe them, even when belief is difficult.

“Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”

2 Corinthians 4:16

As time passes and followers of Jesus grow older, we are moving in two directions at the same time.

Today’s Scripture affirms, “We do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”

Do you see the two directions in this passage?

On the one hand, our physical abilities and strength diminish with the passing years.

You can feel it—whether you are thirty or eighty. On the other hand, if we are walking with Christ, experiencing the renewal of his Spirit, our spiritual abilities and strength increase every day.

This process goes on until our physical life gives out. But in that very instant, our new life in heaven begins.

So if you’re feeling a few aches and pains, no matter what age you are, remember that outwardly, you will fade, but inwardly, the flame in your spirit will burn brighter and brighter until God says, “It’s time, dear child. Come on home, now.”

Thank You, Lord, for renewing my life day by day through your Word and your Holy Spirit.

The pain and physical struggles of today remind me of a soon tomorrow when I will be forever young and strong and filled with joy in your presence.

“Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

2 Timothy 2:22

The spiritual battleground in my life isn’t over a torrid love affair or road trips to Las Vegas.

Some situations I’m my life prevents me from reaching for common temptations.

My fight of faith is played out on the field of my thoughts.

What my body can’t have, my mind will shift into overdrive to deliver.

But daydreams and fantasies only frustrate, bringing restlessness and dissatisfaction with God’s lordship in my life.

Theologian and pastor John Piper says the way you fight fire is with fire.

The fire of enticing thoughts must be fought with the fire of the pleasures God offers.

Our battle involves more than rejecting evil; it means pursuing God with everything.

When faith in Christ has the upper hand in our hearts, we are utterly satisfied with him. He’s enough. He’s sufficient.

You once said, Lord Jesus, that if I drink the water you give, I will never thirst.

And I would echo the woman you met at the well, “Give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty.”

I kneel at your spring of cold, clear water—the water of Life—and drink my fill.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 5:3

Would you consider yourself “poor in spirit?” Do you think it’s a good condition to be in? Or does being “poor in spirit” sound like you’re missing or lacking something?

If you feel that way, then good. Because Jesus says in Matthew chapter 5, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.”

In other words, blessed are you; that is, happy and glad are you if you are lacking spiritually, like, you know, you can’t make it.

Because it shows that you realize how much you need Jesus every single morning when you wake up.

Look, when I start my day, I go to God in empty-handed spiritual poverty, cavernous, open, empty, and I’m knowing that I lack any strength to face the day.

But then, God pours out his grace on people like that. So, when you get up tomorrow, recognize how poor in spirit you are, and then, watch Jesus fill you with himself.

Being poor in spirit reminds you of your deep need for Jesus every morning. Start the day by going to God in empty-handed spiritual poverty, knowing you lack the strength to face the day. He will pour out his grace on you!

“My soul clings to you;

your right hand upholds me.”

Psalm 63:8

If you’ve had a long day or a nonstop, high-pressured week, you can open your Bible almost in the middle and find indescribable reassurance in these ten words:

“My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.” Consider all the things God does with his hands.

He has carved out beds for great rivers, puckered up mountain ranges, ladled out seas, and dug channels for molten lava.

We’re talking here about very strong hands. But they are also gentle.

The hands of Jesus touched a man with leprosy and made him whole, swept across blind eyes and made them see, and took the cold, dead hand of a little girl and raised her up alive.

In the end, those hands were outstretched on a rough wooden beam and pierced with sharp Roman spikes for our eternal salvation.

Right now, Jesus upholds you with his right hand. Pause, consider that, and give him praise. And then rest.

Father, I remember how David said, “You are my God. My times are in your hands.”

You cradle my days, my nights, my very life, and my eternal destiny in those hands.

You shield me, comfort me, and guide me. No matter what crosses my path today, I am safe in your hands.

“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.

For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.

And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.”

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

On a day when discouragement steals across your life like an afternoon shadow, it’s a good time to stash your smartphone, turn off the TV, open your Bible, and read today’s Scripture.

Let the words flow across your soul. Read them out loud. One day, there will be a great shout—the actual voice of a mighty archangel—and the clear call of a trumpet.

Then, in a single heartbeat, we will actually be with the Lord—and with all the believers who have gone before us.

It will be forever! Paul concludes, “Therefore encourage one another with these words.”

So if your anxieties have been pulling you down or your situation is coloring your world blue, take courage from these truths.

And then go out and encourage someone else. Sometimes people have been looking down for so long that they need just a little nudge to look up.

Dear God, I get so excited with the reality that you could call me at any moment.

One minute, I’ll be in room—and in a single blink, I’ll be with you in the air, dancing in the clouds, embracing my dad and mom and so many wonderful friends who have already crossed over. I must wait for that moment, but really, I can’t wait!

We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.

When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.

2 Corinthians 10:12

Sometimes we like to imagine swapping lives with others—lives that look more attractive and desirable than our own.

The cleaned-up, airbrushed impression we get on social media makes us envious of their opportunities, their marriage, their vacations, or their families.

But the truth is, we really don’t know what’s inside their lives, behind those smiling “selfies” they post.

At the same time, we tend to forget our own inside story. We forget how God has equipped and enabled us with special abilities to cope, grow, and thrive through life’s challenges.

We forget the loyal friends and wonderful people he has placed around us and the many times he has helped us, encouraged us, forgiven us, and pulled us out of trouble.

We forget the incomparable, eternal purposes he has for our lives. Would we really want to swap places with someone else?

How much better to be thankful and content with God’s provision!

Lord, please forgive me for allowing envy into my heart.

Forgive me for comparing myself, my opportunities, and my circumstances to the superficial impressions I have of other people’s situations.

Forgive me for so quickly forgetting all of your many kindnesses, miraculous provisions, Holy Spirit-inspired insights, and songs in the night.

Thank you for making me who I am and placing me where I am.
